The Shi Chi is a combination of two different breeds as can be seen by its name. The Shih Tzu Chihuahua mix is a cross between the Shih Tzu and the Chihuahua.
In order to understand the characteristics of the mix you are getting, it is important to look at the general look, size, and temperament of both mixes.
On paper, we are unable to determine what the characteristics are going to be simply because it depends on which parent the Shih Tzu Chihuahua mix inherits most of its genes from. As a result, the coat can be different from dog to dog; some dogs may have a little rough and long coat while others may have a soft, short coat. There are even Shi Chis with a slightly wiry coat. They can come in a variety of colors ranging from sable, brindle, fawn, black and white, and brown and white. As with most designer dogs, you want to make sure that these dogs have not been crossbred several times to avoid potential health problems.
Like other Chihuahua breeds, they can be quite the aggressive type of dog. This does not mean that they are vicious by any stretch of the imagination. It simply means that they are very protective of those that they love. When they hear strangers or a noise that they are not used to, they love to bark in order to protect the family.
The combination of the spunky Chihuahua and the sweet disposition of the Shih Tzu make for a great combination for the family. It produces a dog that is friendly, affectionate, and loveable. They are the type of dog that loves being close and on your lap, and unlike other Chihuahua mixes, they do not focus on one member of the household. Instead, they spread the love evenly.
Unlike other Chihuahua mixes, the Shih Tzu Chihuahua mix needs to be groomed regularly. In order to stop tangles from building up, they need to be brushed at least once every week. Even though they do not shed very much, it is important to remember that not all designer dogs are hypoallergenic – the Shi Chi is not hypoallergenic and therefore not recommended for people that suffer from allergies.
It is recommended that you start obedience training early. Unlike other Chihuahua breeds, owners have reported that they have trouble housebreaking their dog. This is going to require care and attention and may lead to a few 'accidents' before getting it right. However, if you reward them for good behavior, have proper guidance, patience and a level of firmness, training your dog should not be a problem.
As you can imagine by combining two small dogs, the end-result is not going to be huge. They will weigh anywhere between five to fifteen pounds depending on which genes were dominant and will usually not grow more than twelve inches in height.
The Shih Tzu Chihuahua mix has average needs as far as exercise is concerned. They are playful and energetic. Trips to the park, running around, and playing should suffice the exercise they need on a daily basis.
