Home made dog food recipes are becoming increasingly used today, specially considering the recent pet food recalls affecting commercial dog food. When it comes to finding dog food for allergies, more and more owners are relying on themselves to ensure that their dog gets the nutrition they need.
When you use a home made dog food recipe, you can be sure to alleviate symptoms of dog food allergies. This is done by controlling exactly what your dog eats. Some common dog food allergies could easily be avoided by doing just that.
If you are going to start making your own home made dog food it is important to remember that you must know what you are doing.
You need to make sure that whatever meal you decide to make on your own, is balanced and complete enough for your dog. There are no magic ingredients or magic foods, dogs like humans, need nutrients, not particular ingredients.
There are also ingredients that you should never include in a homemade dog food diet. These include garlic, onions, chocolate, macadamia nuts, grapes, and raisins, and you may find out more about these on our toxic dog foods page. Even though some people may assume that they should be aiming for a raw dog diet, it is important to be extremely careful with this as well since it may make your dog unwell.
The commercial pet foods that you can buy at the store have adequate nutrients in them. That is what you need to ensure with any home made dog food recipe. You need some fat, sufficient vitamins and minerals, a carbohydrate source, and a protein source.
Any home made dog food recipe can combine carbohydrates and proteins in various combinations, including chicken and pasta, beef and potatoes, or lamb and rice. With carbohydrates, you get an inexpensive source of energy for your dog, and they provide essential fatty and amino acids.
While we may be used to commercially prepared dog food having a very long shelf life, home made dog food certainly will not. This is one of the 'cons' of having fresh ingredients.
A way to get around this problem and make the food last longer would be to make a large amount, freeze it in individual portions and defrost it as and when you need it.
Of course, it is easy to tell you that there are many different types of homemade recipes available, but you are probably looking for an example or two as well. Below are two examples:
Start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees.
Take all the ingredients and mix them by hand, press them into a loaf pan.
After putting the mixture into a preheated oven for 40 minutes, you can slice it, freeze it, or refrigerate it.
It is possible to substitute the buffalo with lean beef, chicken, or ground turkey if you like. It is not recommended that you mix meats
Salmon ala Bark
Start by combining the cornmeal, eggs, and salmon.
Press them into nice, round patties and press the patties into the cornmeal again.
Place the patties into a pan and sauté until cooked through.
Chop and steam the vegetables.
Combine the vegetables and small pieces of the salmon patties.
If you find that the mixture seems a little dry, add a hint of the yoghurt or cottage cheese.
Before you start any homemade dog diets, it is important to discuss it with your veterinarian. You do not want your attempt at eradicating the symptoms of dog food allergies to become something much worse because you are missing vital nutrients that your dog needs.
A homemade dog food diet is rewarding for the dog and its owner, but it does take a lot of effort on your part. Having said that, watching your dog no longer suffer from those common dog food allergies thanks to your home made dog food recipe is something that is going to make any owner proud.
