The Chihuahua Pomeranian mix has its own club called the Pomchi club of America, and is known as the Chiranian by the American Canine Hybrid Club.
Pomchis are very distinctive looking designer dogs, and have become a popular breed. They weigh between 5 to 12 pounds, and have a long torso with short limbs, ranging from 6-9 inches tall when fully grown.
The Pomeranian Chihuahua mix will have a distinct, wedge shaped round head, and its muzzle will narrow towards the nose. Its eyes are dark, round and large, but should not protrude as much as that of a Chihuahua.
Its ears will stand erect, and are a medium size. Pomchis tails tend to be long and fluffy, typical of the Pomeranian, and are either looped over the back, or carried flat. Pomchis can be either shorthaired or longhaired, and can have a single or a double coat. Its color may be white, black, brown or mixed.
As with any other mix, Pomchis will tend to have the same personality traits as the parents. In this case it is a good thing, since Pomeranians and Chihuahuas are intelligent and loving dogs.
The Chihuahua Pomeranian mix is an intelligent breed that will learn tricks easily. It is generally a good natured dog, which is affectionate and seeks to please its owner, however, at times it may be stubborn.
House training may prove to be more of a challenge though. When doing so, it must be remembered that these dogs do not respond well to punishment, and positive reinforcement is the best way to house break them. Pomchis make very good guard dogs since they get very close to their owners and will always try to protect them, however, they may also bark incessantly.
It is important that Pomchis are introduced to other dogs and people from an early age to avoid them becoming territorial in later life. Pomchis do not deal with small children well, and are very fragile. It is therefore not advisable to allow them to play with larger dogs or play roughly with them.
As with all other Chihuahua mixes, the Pomeranian Chihuahua mix is a suitable dog for indoor living conditions, such as an apartment. It does however, need sufficient space for it to get the exercise it needs. When taking them out, it is important to remember that they feel the cold and are therefore not suitable to cold weather environments, unless of course they are suitably wrapped up.
Pomeranians and Chihuahuas can be sensitive to developing tooth decay and other oral health problems, so regular checks need to be conducted. A Chihuahua Pomeranian mix with no health issues may live up to 17 years.
