Chihuahua shedding

Our short-haired Chihuahua "Espe" is sooo cute, but the shedding is driving us crazy. We had an American Eskimo before and we don't remember this much shedding and she had lots of hair!

Is there a shampoo or food supplement that works? I thought maybe her skin is dry. I've tried a flea comb, a wire slicker, and a regular bristled brush, but nothing seems to help. We've used an oatmeal shampoo and I recently purchased a non-shedding shampoo from Hartz, but it hasn't helped either.

Any other suggestions?

Chihuahua shedding

Hi Debbie,

Allergy free dog foods can be bought over the counter at pet stores or at a vet. You will also find that they are widely available online. On my Dog Food For Allergies page:

there are some that can be bought from PetCo.

Omega 3 can also be purchased at pet stores or online. You can either buy Omega 3 by itself, or you can buy dog food for allergies that will already include this.

There shouldn’t be a problem in switching foods at all, other than perhaps Espe might be used to the current food and not like the new one. With the variety of different dog food for allergies available, this shouldn’t be a problem.

Shedding Problem

Thanks, Dwayne. Is there an allergy free dog food that's available "over-the-counter" or are you talking something that we would get from a vet? Also, would the Omega 3 be something you can get at a pet store? Right now we are combining a dry food (Beneful) with a moist food (Little Ceasar). Since she was a rescue, we didn't know where to start with her food, just wanted something that she'd eat! Would it be ok to switch her over to different food without causing a problem?

Short haired Chihuahua sheds
by: Dwayne

Hi Debbie,

Short haired Chihuahuas shed more than long haired Chihuahuas, since they shed throughout all of the year, with some short haired Chis shedding more than others.

If the shedding is excessive and you have tried brushing but it hasn’t worked, it could be that Espe mah have some sort of food allergy.

Try changing Espe’s diet to allergy free foods as well as adding Omega 3 the diet. This should produce some positive results though it could take some time.

If none of the above helps, I would seek advice from a qualified vet, since Espe may be suffering from a fungal infection.
